DIY Magazine Holder

OH.MY.GOSH. You know when you get so excited about something and you just can’t stop thinking about it all day long?? Well, as I was starting the final week of school with my thirdies, I felt this way about Tara’s MONDAY MADE IT!

I was SOOOO excited to hear that she turned her personal endeavors into a fun linky party for all of us! I’ve been perusing the crafty friends who have already linked up and now it’s my turn. 
I gotta tell you, I got to this weekend and thought, “What ever will my project be for this week?” I’m working on a couple things for the home (hopefully debuting them next week), but nothing for school. So then I decided to look at my pinterest boards for ideas, and found a great one!

This was my inspiration. Kimberly at The Muddy Princess made these for her kids, and I tweaked the idea a bit to fit me! Here is my Magazine or Book Holder (with steps):
Step 1: Cut a cereal box to look like this.

Step 2: Paint the box. You will need a couple of coats. I used basic acrylic paint…in PINK of course 🙂
Step 3: Wrap in duct tape. You can skip step two if your duct tape is opaque. I loved this kind though, because you still see the color behind the tape!
Step 3 cont.: I also wrapped the inside with duct tape to sturdy the box and make it complete. This is not necessary, and it does take a lot more tape and effort. I probably won’t do that next time.

And it’s complete! I still haven’t added labels, but that would be your final step.
I think my favorite part about this project was using the fun duct tape! They have SOOO many kinds now, and this was fun because you can do so much with black and white! I would have changed a couple of things about my product- like not putting the tape inside the box, and adding a label, but overall I really liked it! Now to make more… haha! These would be perfect in your classroom library for magazines.Or you could have your students personalize their own for their book boxes! This only money I used for this project was the duct tape (and this was actually packaging tape.). The paint I had in my collection, and I just used a cereal box that had held my cereal! You could totally use paper and modge podge, or even just paint for these, but the duct tape helped stabilize the box and was a fun twist! 
Now, for the future “Make Its”! 
I thought I would also inform you and myself of what other fun projects I want to do for our Make It Mondays. Here is some of the ideas I have!
I absolutely LOVE Tara at Fourth Grade Frolics‘s Toolbox! I know a lot of teachers have been inspired to do one, me included! This will DEFINITELY happen this summer!
I think I’m going to have a Mason Jar Monday sometime, and make everything from Mason Jars. This Journal Jar from Little Birdie Secrets is so fun, and a great resource for those in our classrooms who never can think of anything to write about! I hate am not a fan of telling students what to write, or having a prompt for their journals, but some just need it! This will also be a place students can write ideas for what to write about. 
Ugh. Pencils. They are probably one of my biggest pet peeves. I don’t like having spend at least 20 minutes a day combined on PENCILS. Students sharpen, then lose, then break, then ask for more, and the cycle repeats. I should write a book and call it “If you give the student a pencil…” because I sincerely have no idea where they all go. Anyways, sorry for the wild tangent, I will be making cutesy crafty jars to house my pencils, like these (by Jill at Controlling My Chaos). This way I don’t have to wait 10 seconds in the middle of my math lesson for my student to sharpen his pencil. 
I know there are so many cute classroom sayings out there, but this one is my absolute favorite. It was one of my first Pinterest pins, and I just LOVE it. I will be making this sign for my classroom!
This phone is not a crafting idea, but it represents an idea. I visited a teacher’s classroom last fall that had the PERFECT tattling fix. She found an old phone from a garage sale, and made a sign that said “Tell Tattling Tammy” on it. Basically, whenever the students wanted to tattle, she would tell them to tell tammy! They would just pick up the phone, and talk to “tammy” about what happened. I LOVED this idea! 
LOVE this idea for objectives!!

Well, those are some of the fun things to come! I’ll leave you with some pictures of my kiddos’ posters of The BFG characters we made today. It was a great culminating activity! We also wrote bios about their characters. Such a fun way to show their knowledge!
