I’ve noticed a lot of bloggers lately have been annoyed with anonymous spam commenters on their blogs. This happened to me a couple months back, and it was SO FRUSTRATING! You go to delete one comment, and another one pops up. They can be inappropriate, not even readable, or totally random. I definitely didn’t want to deal with it, or have my readers have to deal with it! So what did I do? Well, read on, my friends!
There are a couple of ways to keep spammers away, one being to turn on the “prove you’re not a robot” captcha, but that is NO FUN for any commenters!! And, I don’t know about you, I don’t like having to do that when I comment, because it takes FOREVER. So I wanted to find another route- because I WANT my readers to comment!
If you look at the screenshot above, you’ll see I have a yellow circle. This shows WHO can comment on your blog posts. I used to say ANYONE could comment- even if they were anonymous. But guess what?! The only anonymous comments I got were SPAM. So I changed who can comment to a REGISTERED USER. It is still open to pretty much anyone who wants to comment, but now they just have to tell me who they are before they can comment.
Also, notice the word verification is OFF! Yippee for you!
I have found great relief changing my comment settings, and removing anonymous comments. Ever since I did, I have not received one spam comment! It’s an awesome alternative to the word verification. So all you have to do to do what I did is go to your blogger settings, click on “posts and comments” on the sidebar. Then just click on the “registered user” circle to fill that instead of “anonymous”. Make sure you save your settings by clicking the orange button at the top right of the page!
Enjoy the freedom from SPAM! And pass this on to your bloggy friends with the word verification still on their blogs! It’ll be the last comment you’ll have to submit with word verification! Hallelujah!

I wish I could do that, but I do have some anonymous people who leave real comments for me. 🙁 I just wish the people who send the spam would stop-I mean no one actually reads it, do they?

Thank you so much for the idea on this! I had switched to approve comments settings but that is annoying so I did what you did and now no spam and no approving of comments. I was getting a ton!!

What's worse is when you get an email saying that "so & so" has commented on your post & you get all excited, only to find a rambling of unrelated words followed by a highly questionable link. Total bummer moment there!
I switched to Registered Users a few weeks back. Then Mr. B wants to comment on my blog & he can't because he doesn't have any real social media connections. lol. So he just walked across the room & told me what he was going to write. What a dork.
Anyway, I hope you have a fantastic weekend!
