Have you been feeling the effects of winter? Like, crazy super dry, ALL THE TIME?! Well, I have, and I am tired of it! So I whipped up my own hair mask last week that really worked to hydrate and moisturize my hair. And, it’s SO easy! Even better, you probably have everything you need sitting in your pantry! Let’s get started!
You will need:
4 Tablespoons of Coconut Oil
2 Tablespoons of Honey
1/2 an Avocado
Start by removing the skin and pit from your avocado and mashing it in a small, microwave safe bowl. It’s okay if the avocado is browning, like mine is! I use avocado because it softens your hair, adds shine, and promotes hair growth. It has a myriad of nutrients that also helps preventing split ends!
Add in about 4 Tablespoons of coconut oil. The best is to get the pure and unrefined coconut oil. Room temperature it is a solid, so I really just guestimated. It doesn’t have to be perfect! Coconut oil, unlike other oils that coat the hair, penetrates the cortex of the hair to work on the inner parts of your hair follicles! It stays inside your hair to strengthen and make your hair more flexible! How cool is that?! That’s what makes it so good for your hair! And it smells amazing too! If you have yet to get on the Coconut Oil bandwagon, go get some ASAP. There are SO many blog posts on how it does good for your WHOLE body, inside and out! We even love putting a tablespoon or so into our morning fruit and veggie drinks!
Finally, add the honey. Again, this is totally up to you on the amount. I did two parts coconut oil to one part honey, but you can add more if you prefer! The awesome thing that make honey so great for your hair is that it’s a humectant! So that means it actually works to attract moisture to your hair! This is so great, especially when everything is so dry! It also has vitamins, minerals, and lots of healing properties to strengthen and help your hair. It’s basically food for your hair!
Alright, so now that all of your hair helpers are together, pop the bowl in the microwave for two 30 second segments, stirring the mixture in between.
Once you’re done heating the mixture up, take some time to mash the avocado up some more. Don’t worry if you see a layer of oil on the top. All three items have different densities, and it won’t make any difference when it’s on your hair.
Then, you’re just going to work the mask into your dry or damp hair! Make sure you’re in your bathroom, and I suggest sticking your head in the shower or over the sink to keep all the gunk contained. Start with the ends and work your way to the roots. Massage your mask into your hair, and then put your hair into a bun to let the mask soak in. If you have any extra mask, you can apply it to your face as well! All of those components are great for your skin too!
Now go relax, and let your mask sit for 15-20 minutes. Once your time is up, rinse the mask out of your hair, and then shampoo and condition per normal. Another thing to do good and keep moisture in your hair is to let your hair air dry if you have the time.
Enjoy your hydrated, smooth, and shiny hair!
